Evolution of Ecommerce Sites, SEO Challenges and Threats

Electronic commerce or e-commerce is the buying and selling of goods or services over electronic systems like internet and other computer network. It is the emerging market of this time. Several brick and mortar retailers are switching or creating their version on the web. As years pass, the competition between etailers is getting tighter and tighter. Search engine optimization is one of the modern method that etailers use to sell their enterprises. Few more years, the internet will become a battlefield for many businesses. The number of e-businesses will go double or more each year. Something that is anticipated by many businessmen.

1981 was the first time that online shopping was first recorded. It was the Thomson Holidays. And on that decade, online marketing became more popular, especially in UK by auto manufacturers such as Ford, Peugeot-Talbot, General Motors and Nissan. Amazon.com was one of the first e-commerce site on the web, mainly focusing on goods, a good example is book. This site was launched in 1995. Business.com, a business search engine and web directory and pay per click advertising network, was born in 1999. Paypal happened. It is an e-commerce business allowing payments and money transfers to be made through the Internet. And the rest is history.

These development didn't just made internet marketing more convenient, on the negative, it gave rise to more challenges for many SEO specialists. SEO is the one of the most effective and cheapest way to promote one's e-business, along with Social Media Marketing and Interactive Media. As the competition over the web gets a little tougher, SEO should make necessary changes on their methods and approaches.

The fight to the top gets a little tougher. E-commerce today is not just merely having a website. It should now follow certain norms to rank well. If you have an internet business, it is assured that you have a lot of competitor, 50, maybe hundreds. The problem with that is, you may be using the same keywords and product description. Users will get confused and will not know to which one they would settle, you or your computer. Your business should stand out, that is the bottom line, that is the challenge. You should define what you are selling and what differentiates you from the other.

As for Search engine, keywording should still be there. It's just that, you need to update it from time to time. With the large number of internet businesses, users are also using different keywords to become specific with their search. This will largely affect your ranking. It may ignore the keywords you used. If you didn't made it to the first page of the search result, you're gone. Users will go for websites that they will first see on the search return. This is probably the biggest problem brought by the evolution of e-commerce.

But anyway, you can still heed to the changes. There are many SEO tools that catch up to developments that are happening. These tools can help you monitor the trend of keywords being used by your competitor and words typed in by searchers. Good examples are Google Analytics and Statcounter. There are also other methods being adapted like the use of images, videos, podcasts and social media sites. The competition may be a tougher now, but is still winnable.
